We just got through a really rough 24+ outage on BookMooch.

It was so bad that the "BookMooch Down" went over 200 posts...

So this NEW FORMULA Thread is supposed to clean out all of the Bad Karma that cause BookMooch to go down.

Let's hope it works....

If not, this thread is here to keep us updated.

Here is the all-important link to downforeveryoneorjustme:
http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/www.bookmooch.com

So, cross your finger, rub your magic coin, or whatever it takes to keep BookMooch online!!

..... and this thread will never be needed....

Nov 5, 2011, 2:18 pm

Well, I can get to my own page but cannot see inventory or pending to respond to people who have shipped me books. So I guess it is till down in some ways.

Oops - spoke too soon - now I can't even get to my own account.

Modifié : Nov 5, 2011, 3:28 pm

heyjude, I think it is up now... you might have experienced a "burp" or "hiccup" that sometimes happens on BM.

I checked downforeveryone and I checked my page, inventory and a friends page and inventory.

Hope it is back working for you.

EDITED TO ADD: Now I have the problem you were speaking of. I get a home page, but no info, no inventory, no wishlist.

I didn't mean to break it by making this thread too early!!

Nov 5, 2011, 3:56 pm

I had some hiccups in the last hour or so as well. Now I get this message:

Sorry, BookMooch is temporarily unavailable, because I'm having some hardware problems.
BookMooch will be back soon...

-john

Well, at least there is a message there.

5wester
Nov 5, 2011, 3:58 pm

and now the message has changed:
Sorry, BookMooch is temporarily unavailable, because we've moved to a new system, and it's not yet working reliably.
I'm going to bed shortly, and will work on this tomorow morning with fresh eyes.

-john (currerntly in England)

I do hope he will work this out tomorrow - but at least I can stop checking BM every minute or so for now ;-)

6wester

Couldn't resist looking at BM one more time.
The message is now:
Sorry, BookMooch is temporarily unavailable, because we've moved to a new system, and it's not yet working reliably.
BookMooch might be down for a day while I fix this.

My apologies for this interruption in your mooching!

So glad for the message!

The message is gone now, I'm just getting an error page.

But I appreciate the thought behind the message in the first place.

Random tidbit of the day: I almost didn't join BM because the first few times I tried to look at the site, it was down or VERY slow. I'm glad I joined, but I almost didn't.

13AnnieMod
Nov 6, 2011, 8:25 am

Well - we can see the message only if the server is actually up but have issues so John is restricting anything besides the message. If it is down, there is no way to show a message - and I suspect this is what's up now.

14wester
Nov 6, 2011, 8:48 am

So what's up is that BookMooch is down.

Do you think people will quit bookmooch over this?

21skittles
Nov 6, 2011, 8:46 pm

No, they won't quit over this.... almost all websites have down times, including LT.

How the website handles it says more about the website than up time....

No, those who quit will just treat this downtime as the straw that broke the camel's back.

22RidgewayGirl
Nov 6, 2011, 8:51 pm

I think that the site will lose some of the newer members. I know that if I had just joined, sent a few books and then had the site go dark, there would be a good chance that I'd move on to something else.

But people who've been around a while will stay.

Having a message go up eventually helped.

23dadena
Nov 6, 2011, 9:52 pm

Yes, at least we know it is being worked on.

24skittles
Nov 6, 2011, 10:00 pm

I got a friend into bookmooch & they sent me a message yesterday... "what's up with bookmooch?".... I told them about this thread & the downforeveryoneorjustme site...

but others who don't have a connection or a way to check, especially when they don't see a message..... scary!!

25Mareofthesea
Nov 6, 2011, 10:34 pm

I think newer users may think twice about using the site. I know I almost didn't join because the site was having technical issues right about the time I was looking at it. I'm glad I did join in the end, despite the past 6 months or so. I have found many fantastic books, and made some amazing friends along the way.

I just hope John's able to bring the site back up soon.

26Heather19
Nov 6, 2011, 10:49 pm

... I keep automatically clicking on my BookMooch bookmark even though I *know* it's down. Reflexes!

27hotrocks
Nov 6, 2011, 11:02 pm

23 - Do we really know it's being worked on ????

I think this will have a lot of people re-thinking BookMooch.

28Heather19
Nov 6, 2011, 11:32 pm

27: Really? ALL websites have unexpected downtime every once in awhile. Especially with a website like BookMooch, that has basically ONE employee, you can't realistically expect that things will always run smoothly. And, since John *did* post an actual message on the site (msgs 4-6), I can't see why there would be any doubt that it's being worked on.

29orangewords
Modifié : Nov 7, 2011, 12:21 am

@28 I agree that the message from John - briefly available though it may have been - definitely reassured me. Hopefully the next blog post, (in the very very very very near future, because BM will be back up in moments, we hope!), will be about him buying shiny new servers that will streamline and support everything on the site amazingly... ;)

30Mareofthesea
Nov 7, 2011, 4:17 am

I was just able to view the message again. That wasn't an option a couple of hours ago, so hopefully progress is happening.

The message:
We have had to move to a new system due to a hardware problem, and the new system is not yet working reliably.
BookMooch will be unavailable for a day while I work on this.

My apologies for this interruption in your mooching!

- John (the Head Mooch)

31RidgewayGirl
Nov 7, 2011, 7:12 am

Having a site go down for repairs is fine. I don't think we can expect otherwise -- after all, even LT goes down now and again.

Having the message lets us know the site hasn't just disappeared. Which has happened to me before - sites I liked just shutting down one day. But that's not the case here.

32wester
Nov 7, 2011, 10:01 am

Update:
Update on Monday

My apologies for the delay in getting BookMooch working reliably.

I've been working on trying to figure out what was going on, as the problem is elusive. It now looks like perhaps the "ethernet" network card has become unreliable and that's been swapped out for a new one. BM was running fine for a few hours yesterday, and then it disappeared from the Internet, but everything else looked fine.

Hopefully I've got the problem nailed down now, but computers being what they are, odds are that I'm deluding myself and there are still gremlins in the system. Let's hope there aren't!

If BM becomes unavailable again in the next few hours, don't panic, it's just some annoying technical problem that I'll eventually figure out!

-john

Sorry, BookMooch is not available

Sorry, BookMooch won't be available through Sunday (and maybe Monday).
The reason: the server console is giving the scary message "drive failure is imminent" and so I've decided to back everything up and shut BookMooch down as I wait to get a new hard drive to swap out.

Don't worry: there's no danger of data loss, but I'd rather be safe than sorry, and shut the server down before things really do go bad.

My apologies for this interruption in your mooching!

- John (the Head Mooch)

EDIT: to add

if you are in the US - you can use www.usps.com. For weight, a Kitchen scale works best, but you might be able to get the weight of the book off of amazon.com or barnes and nobles.

most other country's postal systems have websites too - so no worries!

63ZoeyEve
Mar 18, 2012, 10:28 am

At least this time we are being told there is an issue and not just page down errors. BM only has 1 server; so when the 1 server does not work he site is down; hopefully all the data did get backed up correctly.

I think I spotted a minor bit of data loss...though it may have been transitory. I mooched a book on 3/10 and it was accepted on 3/11. I got another acceptance email 3/18 apologizing that she hadn't accepted the mooch previously. Since that last was right in the middle of all this up-and-down-ness, it may have been a transitory glitch - but people with pending mooches might want to check their pending pages and make sure the data shown there matches reality/memory.

It was back as of 5 hours ago, according to http://bookmooch.com/m/thread/bookmooch_blog/99:

BookMooch stubbed its toe

You may have noticed that BookMooch tripped over a bookcase, stubbed its toe, and was out of commission for about 20 hours.

Sorry about that!

(begin tech speak) What actually happened is that the ethernet card on the BookMooch server mysteriously decided to die. Once my helper made his way down to the colocation center and figured out that was the problem, it was a short visit to the computer store to swap it out and now everything's ok. (end tech speak)

So, everyone back to your mooching!

Everyone Be Aware of a possible Inventory Add problem! I added books to my inventory yesterday and they all show duplicate copies that can be mooched.
Looks like a glitch on the inventory page. The box on the far right that says "action" is blank and when you choose "send" or " remove dupe copies" it just reverts to a blank box. Thank goodness all of mine are reserved for a member so they are not available to be mooched as I only have one copy of each.
The copies she mooched are on my pending page so maybe when I mark them sent it will be okay, but I wanted everybody to know there might be a problem if you list books and 2 become available to mooch. I did e-mail tech support but no word.

116MyriadBooks
Modifié : Mai 27, 2014, 11:28 am

There seems to be a system-wide server glitch that's wiffing inventory counts. John Buckman just put up a blog entry about it:

http://bookmooch.com/m/thread/bookmooch_blog/103

I suspect tech support is backlogged with this issue. I suggest keeping an eye on the blog page for updates and, as >115 mjspurgeon: said, keeping watch on your inventory at present.

Is it down or is it just me? I get the spinning beach ball of death and a message that says the web page is not available.

It's several hours later already, but it's working for me at the moment with no problems.

>119 varielle: Do you know Down for Everyone? I can't remember the real URL, but the short form is isup.me (name of website you want to check). So isup.me bookmooch.com should tell you whether the problem is on their end or yours.

Here is what isup.me says now: "It's not just you! http://bookmooch.com looks down from here."

bookmooch.com was up a minute or so ago.

if you look at the first post of this thread, the link to "is it down" is there.

So it is. I was on my phone in >121 jjmcgaffey:, so wasn't scanning up that far. The short URL is useful, anyway.

I haven't been able to reach the BookMooch site for about 3 days (it's now Thurs Sept. 3 about 12:30 pm CDT). The "DownJustForMe" site keeps saying BookMooch is down. Does anybody have any idea what's going on? Is BookMooch still there at all?

Sorry, I must have pressed the wrong key just now. Repeat: I haven't been able to reach the BookMooch site for about 3 days (it's now Thurs Sept 3 about 12:30 pm CDT). The "DownJustForMe" site keeps saying BookMooch is down. Does anybody have any idea what's going on? Is BookMooch still there at all?

It's been very wonky the last few days. Can't get in at the moment. Despite having a 3,000 long book wish list, I haven't had anything come up in a couple of months.

It seems John Buckman has figured out a possible reason for the crashes: a user that requests an enormous amount of pages in his RSS feed. He's now put a maximum to the amount of pages a single user can request in a day, so hopefully that will fix it.
