This is a fiction book, written in the last 3 years or so, about a post-apocalypse world. The people who were left lived in an enclosure with high walls. They had batteries to keep the lights on all night to keep the "zombies" (can't remember the exact term they used) away. If they got ahold of you, you died and became a zombie too. They sent teams out scavenging for things ever so often, but they never stayed out after dark, because that's when the zombies roamed. I remember towards the end of the book a team of people set out to find if there any other colonies of people left. They had safe places to stay along the way. There was also a special little girl that could "think" the zombies away. Part of the book is about a man protecting her. This was a fascinating book, I just can't remember the name of it or the author. Please help if you know the name of this one.

From that description it does not sound like Outlanders by Margaret Beames, which is young adult fiction. Are you thinking of an adult fiction book?

The Passage by Justin Cronin almost certainly...

Yep, The passage. That's pretty much an exact description of the book!
