There's an interesting article in the May-June issue of Audubon Magazine about Kopi Luwak - Indonesian coffee that costs more than $500 a pound. Why, you ask? Because these are beans that have passed through the intestines of Asian palm civet cats. The cats eat coffee cherries, then excrete the beans, which are collected, washed and sold. Apparently the animals' gastric juices break down the bitter proteins in the beans, resulting in a "sweet" brew.

That's totally gross. Thank you for that.

Try to imagine the first person to think of eating those beans. Do you think they did it on a dare?

Wow! Thanks for the information, Tropics. You just saved me 500 bucks.

I've had it, it's really spectacular stuff.

If you order it seasonally, there are deals to be had.
They have a glut in August, so I (and some friends) ordered a pound of Robusto and a pound of Arabica.

I got mine from www.animalcofffee.com and we didn't pay anywhere near $500.

When it arrives, it's in a wooden box and they give you an unprocessed coffee-bean cat turd either in lucite as a paper weight or just loose. I requested a loose one and I keep it under a bell jar next to my espresso machine.

I went to a local brewery, to discover new coffees. I had been told that blue mountain (jamaica) was good (that few).
I went to the counter, asked for 1kg (about 2 pounds). By the look of the lady I knew something was wrong.
My friend simply said: have you looked at the price?
It was 18$ /100g.
I would have paid 180$, just a little over my regular budget for coffee.
I only took 100g, went home, and drank a very smooth coffee, very good and unique.
Not worth 180$, though.

#1 - Maybe I'll sell the diamond my cat coughed up so I could afford that special coffee.
