Infrared photography is now being used to read formerly unreadable or barely readable Greek ostraca (writing on pottery shards or stone flakes) from Xeron Pelagos.

Brief article (in French) from the Institut Français d’archéologie orientale - Le Caire (French Institute of Oriental Archaeology in Cairo).

Infrared has it's limitations. For example it would also bring up errors already corrected by the ancient scribe. But yes, it's a wonderful asset. We have been using it in art history for decades, to check on underdrawings and such.
