How do you choose which books to read in English? Is it ones you can't get in translation, or ones you think the original language would add something, or ones that everyone is raving about, or something else? I'm curious...

15laura_88
Oct 18, 2010, 8:56 am

#14 Mainly books that aren't translated yet. For example Wolf Hall, Norwegian wood, North and South and most of the Sookie Stackhouse books. I think I own over 11 books that will fill that category quite nicely. :)

I enjoyed North and South as well. Have you seen the BBC production of it?

Not sure if you're talking to me, Victoria, but I have. :) I absolutely love it! Definitely one of my favorite film adaptations of a novel!

Oct 19, 2010, 12:32 am

#17 & 18 I haven't seen all of the BBC production, but enjoyed the bits I saw. :)
I just hope the language in that one won't be too hard for me. I can't understand why they haven't translated that one yet, because I think something else by Gaskell has been translated.

Book #1 Showdown by Jorge Amado
This is my first read for this challenge although I have still two books to read in my 1010 Challenge, but this doesn't fit there. I read this for school. It's about a village called Tocaia Grande and the people living in there.

Book #2 The Sandman: Endless Nights by Neil Gaiman
This was my first book by Neil Gaiman and my first Sandman book. I will definitely read more Sandman books although some of the stories in this one went over my head.

Book #3 Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Høeg
While I was reading this book I was at times a bit lost with all the names that were mentioned. I also wasn't too interested in the technical stuff that was so thoroughly described about the boat. All in all this was still an interesting book, but a bit different than I expected.

22laura_88
Nov 1, 2010, 7:43 am

Book #4 The Complete Stories by Franz Kafka
This book contains all of Kafka's short stories. Some stories are 40 pages long some just half a page. I really didn't get Kafka... I read the whole book just because it was for school. I thought some of the stories were just pointless. No more Kafka for me, I'm just glad it's over.

#5 Death : The Time of Your Life by Neil Gaiman
#6 The Absolute Sandman Volume One by Neil Gaiman
I'm hooked on the Sandman-series at the moment.. :) I especially liked the part were there was a serial killer convention and they held these panel discussions... I already reserved the volume two from the library.

#7 Smoke Screen by Sandra Brown
Britt Shelley wakes up beside a dead man with no memory what happened last night. I had to read this book quickly because it's a quick-loan from the library.Quite a good read with a few twists in the end.

25laura_88
Nov 9, 2010, 9:58 am

A few more graphic novels... I will next read books with no pictures inside. :)
#8 300 by Frank Miller
I have seen the movie and this was quite similar to it.
#9 Neil Gaiman's midnight days
Gaiman's collected short stories.

Maybe I should have made a category for graphic novels... But I don't want to change anything yet. Will see how the categories fill up.

#10 In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
This was a very well written book. Definitely deserves to be on the list.

#12 The Valkyries by Paulo Coelho
It's been awhile since I last read anything by Coelho. I had forgot his style, but this book soon reminded me what were his other books like.

29laura_88
Nov 25, 2010, 2:23 am

#13 High Five by Janet Evanovich
It was nice that in this book there was some more men in Stephanie's life.
#14 The Dark Knight by Frank Miller

30laura_88
Nov 27, 2010, 7:55 am

#15 Batman : The Dark Knight Strikes Again 1-3 by Frank Miller
I read these in three separate books but they were so short that I'm counting them as one.

Modifié : Déc 1, 2010, 7:44 am

#16 The Book of Tomorrow by Cecelia Ahern
I put this book to the romance/chicklit category, because I consider Ahern as a chicklit writer but this book wasn't chicklit to me... There was a little more darkness (?) in one of the characters that made the book differ from other Ahern's books. I don't know if darkness is the right word but I can't describe it better. I love Ahern's books and this one was no exeption.

#17 Ratsumies by Paavo Haavikko
A finnish play I had to read for school. It was short and they're was something about Finland becoming an independent country. Quite a relevant read for me because 6th of December was the Indepence Day in Finland.

#18 Fables: Legends in Exile by Bill Willingham
I loved this one. Fable characters living in modern day New York.

Books I read on my holliday:
#19 Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs by Chuck Klosterman
At first I thought that this book wasn't for me. There was an essay about "Real World". ( I had never watched it on tv.) I was worried that there would be too much information about things I know nothing of. But as I kept reading, there were more familiar things for me. (Vanilla Sky, soccer etc.)
While reading the book I thought that it clearly was written by an American. Especially in the sport essays about baseball and basketball. I will probably read more of his works if they will be translated...

#20 The heart of a goof by P.G. Wodehouse
Short stories about golf. Even though I have never played golf this was still a very enjoyable read.

On my Christmas Holliday I finally finished these two books which have been in progress at least a month. School has taken so much of my time, that I have read mostly graphic novels and essays/short stories. I'm currently reading the Absolute Sandman 2 and then I am going to read more Fables stories...

35AHS-Wolfy
Jan 7, 2011, 4:10 pm

I thought the Fables stories were great. I've read the first two volumes of the Deluxe editions and really enjoyed them. They certainly whetted my appetite for more graphic novels and I have volume 1 of The Absolute Sandman waiting on the tbr shelves.

36laura_88
Jan 9, 2011, 2:54 am

#35 I have now read the first three Fables and they have been great so far. :) I have to reserve more of them from the library.
I'm almost done with the Absolute Sandman Volume Two. Thanks to my local library I don't have to buy the Absolute Sandman's, because they are really expensive (over 100 €). Now I only have to pay 0,5 € when I reserve one :)

37laura_88
Jan 9, 2011, 3:15 am

I changed my Romantic/Chicklit category to Graphic novel, because I know I will read more graphic novels in the next few months...
Book #21 Fables: Animal Farm Before reading this, I imagined it would be more like the Orwell Animal farm. But it was a lot more than that :). I like the fact that the story continues from one book to another. Maybe that's why I read the third right after this one...
#22 Fables: Storybook Love Without spoilers I can just say, that I can't wait what happens next...

38laura_88
Jan 13, 2011, 3:27 pm

Book #23 Absolute Sandman Volume Two by Neil Gaiman
It's funny how the Sandman stories are all different compared to one another but there is still something I like in all of them.

39AHS-Wolfy
Jan 13, 2011, 3:43 pm

I've now started on Vol.1 and enjoying it so far. Interspersing a couple of other books though as you just can't take them anywhere - just too big and heavy. Glad you're still finding something new in the stories in Vol.2 as I'm sure it will be added to my wants list soon.

40laura_88
Modifié : Jan 13, 2011, 4:00 pm

#39 Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I haven't read a lot of graphic novels or comics in the past, but within three or four months I have read books from, for example: Gaiman, Willingham and Frank Miller. And I'm hungry for more... :)

Edited to add that the first sentence is a mess because I'm preparing to go to sleep and I'm too lazy to correct it. ;)

Book #24 Fables: March of the Wooden Soldiers
and #25 Fables: The Mean Seasons

I'm currently reading Italo Calvino's If on a Winter's Night a Traveller but when I read it I have to be very concentrated on the book. It's a short book but it will take me some time to finish it. Hopefully I get it read before I have to return it to the library...

42clfisha

I loved the book when I read it last year but some of Calvino's sentences need to be read carefully, they are huge :)

#43 I know exactly what you mean. :) The book is great so far and I like the fact it has so many levels.

Book #26 Kauhun tasapaino ja muita kirjoituksia by Anna-Leena Härkönen
When I started this column collection, I just couldn't stop reading and read the book cover to cover. Anna-Leena Härkönen wrote these for a magazine called Image.
I just like her style. She writes about relationships, travelling, arguing etc. She writes passionately and uses a lot of examples from her own life. She is at times brutally honest about herself and her opinions.
I have read two of her novels before reading this one, but I enjoyed her colums more than her longer works.

Book #27 Kauneuspilkkuja/ Grain de Beauté by Jean-Philippe Peyraud
A graphic novel about beauty spots. In the book there is three different versions about the same situation. I liked the way that the beginning and the end were the same but everything that happened in the middle was different in each of the versions.
#28 If on a Winter's Night a Traveller by Italo Calvino
An excellent book from Calvino. I don't have the words to explain the book, you just have to read it yourself. I may have to reread this at some point, when I can concentrate better. This was quite different compared to Baron in the Tree, the previous book I read from his works.

45laura_88
Fév 13, 2011, 8:18 am

Book #29 Palele porvari ja muita kirjoituksia by Anna-Leena Härkönen read (Feb 8th -11)
Another column collection from Härkönen.
#30 Olviretki Schleusingenissä by Aleksis Kivi read (Feb 13th -11)
A play I read for school. Kivi was one of Finland's national writers. This play is a farce about drunken Prussian soldiers.

A few extras I'm not going to count for the challenge:
Harlequin Valentine by Neil Gaiman
All-star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder by Frank Miller

46laura_88
Modifié : Fév 21, 2011, 3:32 pm

Book #31 I Am Legend by Richard Matheson
Quite different compared to the movie, but I liked it. After the final page, I just wanted to know, what happened after that... Guess I will never know.

Book #32 My Swordhand is Singing by Marcus Sedgwick
A YA fantasy book from my own shelves. Especially the beginning was a bit darker than I expected it to be. I'm glad I finally read this book. It really hooked my while I was reading and there were some twists I didn't see coming. This was the first book I read from Sedgwick and I already borrowed his another translated book The Dark Horse from the library.

A lot of books to update...
Book #33 Absolute Sandman Volume Three by Neil Gaiman
Didn't like this one as much as the previous Absolutes. Actually the "Word's End" -stories were my favourite stories. In some of those stories Sandman didn't appear at all.

Book #34 Whatever happened to the Caped Crusader? by Neil Gaiman
Some Batman stories by Gaiman.

Book #35 Fables: Homelands
Book #36 Fables: Arabian Nights (and Days)
In these two Fables stories I missed Snow White and Bigby. I think they will have a bigger role in the sequal books again.

Book #37 Apatosauruksen maa by Miina Supinen
Great collection of short stories by Supinen. First book I read from her but I have previously read some of her columns.

Book #38 Sudenmorsian by Aino Kallas
A Finnish classic about a women who becomes a werewolf. I was suprised how much I liked this book. Especially the poet-like language was fascinating. I very rarely read Finnish classics but this book from the 1920's may inspire me to read more of them.

Book #39 I'm with the band -Confessions of a Groupie by Pamela Des Barres
I finally finished this autobiography by Des Barres. It was an ok read for me. I liked the fact that she honestly told about her life and about the mistakes she made. The reader certainly gets a peek to the good and bad sides of rock 'n' roll lifestyle.
There were so many people mentioned in this book that at times I didn't remember who was who. Especially the female friends of Des Barres got all mixed up in my head.

Book #40 An Elegy for Easterly by Petina Gappah
A short story collection about people living in Zimbabwe and Zimbabweans who live abroad. In the stories the reader gets to know a lot of different kind of problems that the characters have. The problems include for example HIV, infidelity, death of a family member and financial problems.
The book is not depressing even though it handles difficult issues. After some of the stories I just wanted to know what happened after the stories ended. Some characters were left in situations that seemed hopeless.

Book #41 Jack of Fables Vol 1: The (Nearly) Great Escape by Bill Willingham
Some interesting characters in this Fables spin-off. I find Jack a bit irritating character but he was ok in this one. I guess I will have to read more of JoF-books when I get hold of them from the library. :)

I finished my first gategory! Well the graphic novels have been my new favourite genre for few months, so that's no suprise...

Mar 16, 2011, 3:19 pm

#51 Thanks! :) Will see how long it will take me to finish my second gategory...

Book #42 Swamp Thing: Volume 1: Bk. 1 by Alan Moore
I didn't become a fan of the Swamp Thing after reading this. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that it was black and white graphic novel. Maybe I had too high expectations because I really liked The Watchmen.

A few extras I'm not going to count to the challenge.
Should You be Laughing at This by Hugleikur Dagsson and
Is This Some Kind of Joke? by Hugleikur Dagsson
Some twisted humour in these two. Some pictures were funny, some just grose. Sometimes I got the feeling he was repeting the same jokes over and over again with a small twist.

Book #43 Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler
My first encounter with Philip Marlowe. I liked the book even though I disliked all the female characters in it. I didn't guess the end beforehand so I had to read to the end of the book to know who was behind the crime and what was the motive.

Book #44 Karusellimatka by Anna-Leena Härkönen
Short stories from Härkönen. All the stories didn't work for me. I like her columns more.

I would have probably liked this one more if I had read the first Thessaly comic before this one.
Book #46 Terveisiä pallomerestä by Anna-Leena Härkönen
Magazine columns by Härkönen.

I had to read a lot of children's books for school. I decided to list them also even though they were pretty quick reads.

One more children's book:
Book #55 Aprillia, Sinttu by Lin Hallberg
Book about a horseloving girl called Elina and her favourite pony Sinttu.

And then something quite different:
Book #56 The Second Sex part one by Simone de Beauvoir
This book is definitely a feminist classic. This was the first unabridged Finnish translation of the first part of The Second Sex. It took me awhile to read it because it's very philosophical. All I have to say is the translators have had a lot of work with all the references. I'm not sure if I'm going to read the second part when it comes out.

Book #57 Don't Tell Me the Truth About Love by Dan Rhodes
Short stories about love. Almost all of the stories have an unhappy ending. I really liked the fairytale like style.

Book #58 Gold by Dan Rhodes
Interesting story about a woman who goes to a small village every year for a visit. I liked the way the author slowly revealed more about the characters with small stories about them.

Book #59 Fables: Wolves by Bill Willingham
Book #60 Fables: Sons of Empire

Book #62 Love Story by Erich Segal
Didn't care for this one. The story or the characters didn't move me at all.

Book #63 Hyvästi tytöt by Riku Korhonen
A man memorizes the women in his life. Some of the stories were quite absurd but all in all I liked it a lot.

Book #64 The Nonexistent Knight by Italo Calvino
A story of Agilulf a knight who is just an empty armor. Agilulf has a squire Gurduloo who is a bit crazy. A short and great story.

Another great Montalbano book. I've also been watching the Montalbano series on DVD and it is as good as the books are.

Book #89 The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Finally I read this book that everyone's been raving about. It was worth the praise it has got. I have book number two in my shelf waiting.

Book #90 Captain Alatriste by Arturo Pérez-Reverte

Book #91 Dark Lover by J.R. Ward
An excellent beginning to a series full of vampires. I had to order books 3 and 4 to get to them quicker.

just catching up on this thread! I've never read the Sandman presents stuff, just the sandman comics that Neil Gaiman wrote - how do the other authors hold up? I have read Mike carey's lucifer graphic novels which use the character of Lucifer as depicted in the Sandman universe which I really enjoyed

I lost interest in Fables after a few of them (about the time you find out who the enemy is iirc) - how do the later ones hold up?

#65 Well I wasn't that excited about Thessaly mainly because I don't care that much about her.
I'm still enjoying the Fables world, I think I've read about 12 of them. I like the fact that I have no idea where the story is going.

#107 The Postman Always Rings Twice
I forgot to list this earlier. After reading this book I would like to see the movie version too.

#108 Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters
I liked this more than Pride and prejudice and Zombies. It was changed enough with all the sea monsters and pirates.

#109 Guilty Pleasures
Book #1 in the Anita Blake series. Liked it and will be reading the second one soon.

#110 The Wizard of Oz
A great classic. I've seen the movie before so I could compare the two. The movie was a bit different but I liked them both.

#111 Wide Sargasso Sea
I read this in English so I didn't quite get all that was going on under the surface. I'm considering reading the translated version some time in the future.

#112 Lord John and the Private Matter
The first book by Gabaldon that I've ever read. Liked it, and will be reading more of her books later. Have two of hers on my shelf waiting for the right time.

#113 Lover Unbound
The ending was quite weird for me. Still a goor series.

Extras:
#22 Neko by Rosa Liksom and Klaus Haapaniemi
Beautiful Japanese style illustrations.

#23-26 Muumipeikko books 5-8 by Tove Jansson
Got to love those Muumis.

#27 Timoleon Vieta Come Home by Dan Rhodes
Absolutely hated the ending.

#28 Joe Speedboat by Tommy Wieringa
A good story about friendship between different boys.

#29 Evil Cat: a Fluffy Kitty Gets Mean by Elia Anie
Totally hilarious.

#30 Selfish Pigs by Andy Riley

#31 Evil Penguins: When Cute Penguins Go Bad by Elia Anie

#32 Kamala luonto by Jarkko Vehniäinen
Funny cartoons about a lynx and a weasel.

I've decided to but my extra reads to my 12 in 12 challenge from now on. That way I have a change of finishing it.

Nice list of books you have finished! I have read most of Gabaldon's works and I have a preference for her Lord John stories. IMO, you picked a good one to start you Gabaldon reading with!

#69 I have Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber on my shelf but I don't have time to read them right now. I can't wait to continue the Lord John series after I've reduced my TBR pile a bit.

Book #115 Hiljaiset päivät Nigellan lumoissa by Erlend Loe
This book reminded me why I like Erlend Loe's style. This was a quick humorous read consisting mostly of dialog between Bror Telemann and his wife Nina. They are on a holiday with their three children in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Bror spends his time thinking about theatre (his a dramatist) and Nigella Lawson. The book was a lot of fun and I would like to read more Loe's books in the near future.

#116 Black Orchid by Neil Gaiman
Not my favourite of Gaiman's graphic novels. I'd never heard of Black Orchid before reading this book and it wasn't quite what I expected. Nevertheless the illustrations were beautiful.

5 to go...

Book #117 Seven Up by Janet Evanovich
It was nice to read about Stephanie again. It was funny to read about her "perfect" sister who shows up suddenly after her husband has left her. And naturally grandma Mazur was the most fun character of them all yet again.

Only 4 to go...

Book #118 Pale View of Hills by Kazuo Ishiguro
In the end of the book I didn't want it to end because I wanted to know more about the main characters life.

#119 Suutele minua tuhat kertaa by Eva Cantarella
This book tells about the love and sexlifes of the Romans.

#120Nocturnes by Kazuo Ishiguro
Not my favourite Ishiguro book but still there were some good stories.

#121 Great Fables Crossover by Bill Willingham

Finally I'm done with this challenge and I can concentrate on my 12 in 12 challenge. :)
