Book tastes

Military science fiction, Critical Role as well as Star Trek and Rick & Morty, reprints of early comic editions, omnibus comics editions like the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents Archives. I’ve been fascinated by the Dan Dare reprints that I’ve found at the library, too.

Don't get this!

Anything from David Weber's Honorverse as I've read them and already have the next novel on pre-order. The next Chuck Gannon book in the Riordan Caine stories is also on pre-order already.

Other notes

I teach a "Computer Applications and Concepts" class at a community college so a neat history of computing book like "The Modem World: A Prehistory of Social Media" would be fun. I'm also exploring tabletop RPGs in my middle age so books about D&D outside the core rulebooks are things that I'm reading increasingly. I am trying to contact to parts of the pre-COVID world that I otherwise never knew.

Secret Santa

alpacaherder's Secret Santa was saroz!

saroz: Hi alpacaherder! I hope you have a very Merry Christmas. I tried to pick books you would like. Bujold and Scalzi are both folks I enjoyed in college and if you like them, too, they have big long series of military sci-fi. Ninefox Gambit is a book several friends of mine have raved about. And because I saw you had some classic Doctor Who books, I really wanted to get you one, but my selection at Powell's was very limited - I went with Daleks and space battles with thinking that'll just be silly, exciting popcorn fun. :) Happy New Year! ~S (Déc 11, 2023, 11:37pm)
katemcangus: checked and ordered (Déc 11, 2023, 3:03pm)
MDGentleReader: Obernewtyn is a book alpacaherder should borrow from me. (Déc 1, 2023, 7:44pm)
fulner: For Star Trek "Titan: Taking Wing" I think hits all the spots. An interesting sci-fi Star Trek tale, the first after Riker leaves the Enterprise for his own captainise. It's the first in a series, so no real need to read anything else before hand, and its available NEW from Powell's (if that's important) (Déc 1, 2023, 5:52pm)
LibraryPerilous: Linda Nagata or Yoon Ha Lee's Ninefox Gambit for military sci-fi, and John Ringo or David Drake probably wouldn't go amiss with the Santee either. K. B. Wagers also writes good military sci-fi, but they might be too politically liberal for the Santee's tastes.

There's also War Stories: New Military Science Fiction, edited by Jaym Gates.

Infinity Gate is a fabulous novel! (Nov 30, 2023, 4:17pm)
thebookmagpie: Perhaps Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie, the Illuminae series by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kauffman, or The Forever War by Joe Haldeman. (Nov 29, 2023, 5:05pm)
bigcurlyloz: One of Iain M Banks Culture novels? (Nov 29, 2023, 3:14pm)
Nica6: You could try The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. Its science fantasy more than scifi, but was written by a military spouse and features combat with dragons!

Also, Infinity Gate by M.R. Carey is a thrilling imaginative character-driven novel that builds to an intergalactic war. (Nov 28, 2023, 9:14pm)
