SantaThingSantaThing Entry #163

Book tastes

Verity will be 11 in January and attends the 5th grade. She’s into chapter books, particularly YA.
She only wants fiction.
She identifies heavily with the LGBTQ+ community and loves reading material with LGBTQ+ characters and themes. She likes books with post-apocalyptic plots.
She’s very into TikTok and Roblox.
She likes books with a wry sense of humor, scary stories, and more mature themes. It’s fine if a book is more teenage-oriented in content.
I (her mother) like books for Verity with themes of social justice and strong three-dimensional female characters. I like sneaking science and/or history into her fiction.
Most of the guidance given here comes directly from Verity. Verity has been participating in SantaThing since she was born, but this is the fourth year Verity has had her own LibraryThing account and her own library for her Santa to look at.

Don't get this!

No non-fiction, at Verity’s insistence. No religion. No self-help. No TV or movie character books (e.g. tie-ins with Nickelodeon or Disney shows). No Disney Princess or Barbie. No Wimpy Kid books; even if you don’t see them in her library, she has all of them. No books about grief or sibling loss unless you're a bereaved parent and your kids *really* responded to one.

Other notes

Verity's big sister, Liberty, was a former SantaThing recipient and died of DIPG brain cancer in December 2015 at age 5 after a 4 month fight. We try to find books with or about blonde, curly-haired little girls with a zest for life, who are always moving, with artistic talent, or athletic skill, or who are brave and smart.

katemcangus: checked and ordered (Déc 6, 2023, 10:50pm)
katemcangus: Unfortunately one of the titles chosen was used (The Falling Machine by Andrew P. Mayer) and when we adjusted the cost it was too high, and thus we had to remove it. (Déc 6, 2023, 10:37pm)
EerierIdyllMeme: Heartstopper is super cute, and if she decides she's into romance and graphic novels, I'd also recommend Cheer Up!: Love and Pompom (Nov 29, 2023, 3:21pm)
faerywings: Seconding the graphic novel suggestion, maybe The Curie Society by Heather Einhorn? (Nov 13, 2023, 7:23pm)
smileydq: Maybe 'Heartstopper, volume 1' by Alice Osman? It is fiction with LGBTQ+ YA characters, but a graphic novel so perhaps a new genre for here? (Nov 13, 2023, 6:11pm)
