A propos de ma bibliothèque
This library list is based on the following work :
P. Villey, Les Lectures de Montaigne et leur chronologie, in Les sources & l'évolution des «Essais» de Montaigne, Paris, Hachette, 1908, vol. I, pp. 52-294

Only the certified books are listed here :
* Books than Montaigne said he have read or own in the Essais
* Book strongly recognised by citation in the Essais
* Books with his autograph in actual public libraries

This is probably only a little part of the real Montaigne library, as he cite other authors in the essai not listed here because we don't know witch book of them he have. We also not have listed the books than we are not sure he may have read.

The Montaigne library have the following owners by heritage :
Michel Eyquem de Montaigne until 1533
Marie de Gournay until 1645
François de La Mothe Le Vayer until 1672

Montaigne itself may have inherited the Étienne de La Boétie books.

A propos de moi
Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533-1592) was one of the most influential writers of the French Renaissance, known for popularizing the essay as a literary genre and is popularly thought of as the father of Modern Skepticism. He became famous for his effortless ability to merge serious intellectual speculation with casual anecdotes and autobiography—and his massive volume Essais contains, to this day, some of the most widely influential essays ever written.
