A propos de ma bibliothèque

My library is always a work-in-progress. Because of my profession as a professor of philosophy, about half of my library comprises philosophical works -- both classic and contemporary. My passions, however, are the classics and fiction that has/will stand the test of time. I have a sizable collection of Harvard's Loeb classical library of both the Greek and Roman authors and a decent collection of other classic and contemporary fiction. The latter is growing, most recently, by my having abandoned my Luddite tendencies to embrace eBooks. With the help of Calibre and Project Guthenberg, especially, I am curating a digital library suited to my peripatetic ways.

A propos de moi

I am a professor of philosophy whose profession requires that I regularly read philosophical works but whose true love, after Plato and Aristotle, is fiction. Some I love for its psychological acuity (think Henry James and Virginia Woolf), others I love for their philosophical richness (think Dostoevsky and Murdoch), yet others -- perhap most of all -- for the poetry of their prose (Edna O'Brien and John Banville come to mind). A grey day cuddled up with some good fiction and strong coffee is, for me, pure bliss.
