I have six 6-shelf library cases full of books. My focus is on contemporary literature, including everything by Updike, Roth, Malamud, Heller, Tyler, McCarthy, Irving, Barth, Bellow, Fitzgerald, Grass, Wolfe and Hemingway. (I happened to take Tom Wolfe's place at the Washington Post.)

I've worked on many newspapers, including the Washington Post, Miami Herald and San Francisco Examiner, and as a speechwriter for Sen. Gaylord Nelson, co-chairman of Earth Day, on Capitol Hill.
