A propos de ma bibliothèque
Hartford's small library is listed on a scrap of paper headed "Books belonging to Mary Hartford," which is believed to have been written c. 1825. At the bottom of the list, in a different hand, is written "to be sold," followed by the line "sold at Auction for 75 cents." A final phrase is added in a third hand, but is unclear.

A propos de moi
Mary Hartford (c. 1792-1872) was a free African-American woman who lived with and worked for the family of Rev. Jeremy Belknap from an early age.

A small collection of papers owned by Mary Hartford until her death are included in the Jeremy Belknap Papers at the Massachusetts Historical Society.
