Heavy YA. Markus Zusak is genius, as is Dagoberto Gilb. Too many books to fit in the house, so I had to have floor-to-ceiling shelves built in the two-car garage. My husband says I'm sick, but it's cheaper than crack. Lots of books on writing, too. One favorite: John Dufresne's THE LIE THAT TELLS A TRUTH.

As a high school English teacher, I got tired of trying to convince kids reading was one of life's true pleasures. They had years of reading-as-medicine indoctrination before they got to me and most groaned every time we opened a book (even THE CHOCOLATE WAR, which I had to sneak in since the school board disapproved). Now I earn my reading budget by working a freelance editor and writing coach; I love working with willing clients in the process of turning wispy ideas into concrete books.
