In this fifth book of the Storyteller series, Gwernin Storyteller and his bardic student Llacheu travel through sixth century southwestern Britain with the famous bard Taliesin Ben Beirdd, visiting ancient sacred sites and learning their lore, before participating in three bardic competitions which may finally allow Gwernin to reach the coveted status of a Master Bard.

Along the way they both meet threats from their past, Gwernin discovers that some of the Old Gods of Britain are still present, and Taliesin shares some of his memories of his time as King Arthur's youngest bard.

June 2022 Lot

Most of these poems are, in one way or another, SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) poems – either poems written for or about people in the two Kingdoms (West and Outlands) where I have so far lived and played, or poems about persons or events in the SCA period (approximately 600-1600 AD). Most of them are written in medieval fixed forms – one of my on-going quests being a search for ways of reproducing the sound and feel of medieval Welsh poetry in modern English. And yet, because the bardic art I practice is a performance art, these are in a larger sense not my poems at all, but merely pale imitations – poems preserved on paper. Until I can come and sing the real poems to you, I hope you will enjoy the substitutes.

Offre terminée: Mai 30 à 06:00 pm EDT

"Taliesin sang it, so it must be true. In all the years I knew him, I never heard him lie—though there are ways and ways of dealing with the truth, and a bard must know them all. But he was using none of these on the night when he sang Talhaearn Tad Awen’s death song in Prince Cyndrwyn’s high-roofed wooden hall, with the cold wolf-wind of a bitter winter snuffling round the doors and windows, and frightening the flickering torch-flames which cast his long black shadow, now here, now there, across the smoke-stained walls: across the faces of all of us who listened, and across our lives as well." So begins this fourth book of Gwernin Storyteller's adventures, which will take him and Taliesin to Ireland in a time of conflict between Kings, Christian Saints, and Druids.

Avril 2022 Lot: 2 Livres Offert

Offre terminée: Avril 25 à 06:00 pm EDT

In the mid-sixth century, one hundred years after St. Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland, most of the Irish Kings were Christian – at least in name. But Díarmait mac Cerbaill, in his attempt to consolidate his position as High King, had recourse to an older magic. In about 560 A.D., he held the last “Feast of Tara” – the old Pagan sacred wedding of the King with the Goddess of Sovereignty. And at the subsequent battle of Cul Dreimne, the Chronicle of Ireland reports that Fráechán mac Tenusán cast the "druidical fence" over Díarmait’s army. In the event, Díarmait lost that battle due to "the prayers of Colum Cille" (Saint Columba).

But who was Fráechán mac Tenusán, and how did he come to be practicing Druid magic for Díarmait? The King’s Druid is his story.

The poems in this little book were primarily intended for use in Neopagan Druidical rituals, but there's no reason others shouldn't enjoy them, and perhaps find them pertinent to their own spirituality. Read, enjoy, and feel free to perform them all in your religion and your life.

“Blood and fire, gold and steel and poetry, a river’s voice in the silence of the night, and the shining strings of a harp – all these and more I have known in my time... Now they are all gone, the men and women I knew when I was young, gone like words on the wind, and I am left here in the twilight to tell you their tale. Sit, then, and listen if you will to the words of Gwernin Kyuarwyd, called Storyteller…” So begins the tale of young Gwernin’s adventures as a wandering storyteller and would-be bard in the chaos and contradictions of 6th century Britain. Along the way he encounters allies and enemies both human and supernatural, finds love and friendship, and learns the lore - and the true meaning - of a Bard’s profession.

Séries: Storyteller (Selections)
This is a collection of prose and poetry taken from the first three books - the Young Gwernin trilogy - of the Storyteller series, which follows the adventures of a group of bards and storytellers in the years after King Arthur's death. If you have not yet read the novels, you might want to go and start there, as some of these poems could be considered to be plot spoilers. On the other hand, you might just want to plunge in now and see how you like Gwernin's world. . .

As warfare comes to North Wales, bardic apprentice Gwernin must master all three of its meanings in order to keep himself and his friends alive. From otherworldly dangers to rich rewards in the fire-lit halls of kings, from bloody battle and grueling labor to tender romance, The Ash Spear follows him in the thrilling conclusion of this first trilogy in the Storyteller series.

"If not to sing the warriors' deeds now, then to remember those who fought before, and teach those who will fight afterwards the way of it... We are like the pin in the cloak-clasp, the smallest, plainest part, and yet without it the brooch falls away and is lost, and the cloak with it, and the man perishes from the cold. So it is with us. If the Bards should ever take the Druids' road west, it would be a black day for the Cymry, for what is there to hold a people together who do not remember their past?"

Guernen Sang Again: Pryderi's Pigs and Other PoemsAperçu

Séries: Guernen Sang It (2)
This is the second volume of my poetry which I published as a test three years ago when I first came across Lulu. To quote from the introduction to the first volume: "Most of these poems are, in one way or another, SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) poems – either poems written for or about people in the Kingdom of the Outlands, or poems about persons or events in the SCA period (approximately 600-1600 AD)... Most of these poems are written in period forms, or approximations of period forms – one of my on-going quests being a search for ways of reproducing the sound and feel of medieval Welsh poetry in modern English! And yet, because the bardic art I practice is a performance art, these are in a larger sense not my poems at all, but merely pale imitations – poems preserved on paper. Until I can come and sing the real poems to you, I hope you will enjoy the substitutes." This is a signed first edition with default Lulu cover.

This is the first volume of my poetry which I published as a test three years ago when I first came across Lulu. To quote from the introduction: "Most of these poems are, in one way or another, SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) poems – either poems written for or about people in the two Kingdoms (West and Outlands) where I have so far lived and played, or poems about persons or events in the SCA period (approximately 600-1600 AD). The West Kingdom poems were written in 1995-1997, when I lived in the Barony of Earngyld (mundanely Juneau, Alaska). The Outlands poems were written from 1998 to the present in the Barony of Caerthe (Denver, Colorado). The Welsh poems overlap the Outlands poems in time, but are separated from them by their different content; some were written for the Colorado Welsh Society, others for competitions.
