A Residue of HopeAperçu
Papier

Marika Bonetti is preparing dinner when she gets a phone call from the police informing her that the EMS has taken her daughter, Jessica, to the emergency room of the local hospital. Dropping everything, Marika drives to the hospital, where she learns that Jessica is in a coma from a drug overdose. Though her daughter has often gotten into trouble, Marika didn’t know she was taking hard drugs, and she wonders where Jessica got the drug that has put her life in jeopardy. Marika’s husband, Frank, arrives as they’re taking Jessica to the ICU, and they speculate that their daughter may have gotten the drug from a person she met on social media, where she’s always searching for someone who will love her and make her happy.

At the age of thirty-two, Jessica doesn’t have a job that pays enough for her to live independently, she doesn’t have a real social life, and she doesn’t have whatever it takes to avoid repeatedly getting into trouble. Over the next few days as Marika visits her daughter in the hospital and prays for her recovery, she wonders what she did wrong as a mother that made Jessica turn out this way, and looking for an answer, she examines her life as far back as she can remember. After all that has happened she still loves her daughter unconditionally, and she has a residue of hope for her, but her faith is challenged.

Blind in GranadaAperçu
Papier

Jim Wyatt, a prominent state senator from Minnesota, is kidnapped on a visit to New York City by an Islamic human rights group who mistakenly believe that he is a CIA agent. They hold him hostage in return for the release of a Muslim cleric who was convicted and imprisoned for inciting violence in connection with the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993. Through a series of video tapes addressed to the public and aired on television, Jim urges people to support the cause of releasing the cleric, who he believes was wrongly convicted.

Between the tapes, while locked in a bedroom, Jim examines his relationships with his four wives, his seven children, and his parents. He also develops a relationship with Zoraya, the leader of his captors, who is young enough to be his daughter. Out in the world Muslims are being killed daily in the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia, which his captors use as justification for what they are doing. Since they have set a deadline by which time if the government doesn't release the cleric they will kill Jim, his life depends on his efforts to gain the trust of Zoraya and persuade the government to release the cleric.

A Contrite HeartAperçu
Papier

The story of a woman who committed a major crime against the military government in Argentina during the Dirty War in the 1970s.

After twenty-five years she still feels guilty for what she did, and since it led to the deaths of other people, including the father of her child, she's unable to forgive herself. She's living in New York City now, and as she's leaving for work one morning she confronts a young man standing on the sidewalk in front of her apartment building who addresses her with the alias she used in her crime. She is startled by the encounter, especially since the guy speaks English with the accent of someone from Argentina, but she recovers enough to deny that she's the person he thinks she is, and she walks away, wondering if he's an Argentine police agent who has managed to track her and finally find her. She can get away from him during the day, but he knows where she lives, and she can expect him to be waiting outside her building that evening when she goes home.

So what does this guy want from her? Does he want to arrest her and take her back to Argentina where she will be justly punished for her crime? Does he want revenge? She can only imagine, and she can't ask for police protection because if she does, it will all come out: what she did in Argentina and its fatal consequences. Although it was dormant, her feeling of guilt was always alive in the bottom of her heart, and now it has been aroused by a guy identifying her as the woman who played a key role in the kidnapping of an army colonel so many years ago.
