The overarching theme of this book is love. It was love that brought my grandfather to South Africa in the first place. It was love for the Zulu people without medical care that caused my brother Dennis to persuade his professor to beg Witwatersrand University to open their doors to non-white students to train as doctors for the first time during the Apartheid era.

This book is not just about me but also about you. It's about our shared relationships with our fellow beings.

One of the greatest compliments paid to me as a dentist is when a lady patient sitting in my dental chair in England suddenly took my hand and clasped it in hers and said.

"You know Dr Walters I never look upon you as my dentist but as my brother".

That was said from the heart and will live with me forever.
