aulsmith : Not a must read. Probably too sexist for current readers.
elkiedee: No such thing in a way as a book everyone has to read or like, but this is a list put together by a specific group of journalists and it's their opinion. And if I were making a reading list on 20th century crime fiction I would include this for its influence on many who read it, whether they directly imitated it as a whole or took some aspects or set out to write something very different.
