julie10reads: The perfect love story and set in,incredibly, turn of the century WASP Southern Ontario! Montgomery captures the priggish snobbery of the time and place, also the low social and economical value of an ageing, middle class spinster. Can't count how many times I've read it!

julie10reads: For me, Willa Cather is a literary god: every word is necessary and her elisions, like Hemingway's, are freighted with meaning. Cather's knowledge and love of music plangently soundtracks the life and love of a beautiful, ardent young woman.

julie10reads: Like Hope Muntz, Sigrid Undset wrote as a chronicler of the time of her novel, 14th century Norway. Often grim, always epic.

merrystar : Read as an adult
julie10reads: It bears repeating that Georgette Heyer's Regency novels are Jane Austen-ish romances told in a lavishly OED vocabulary with syntax to make H.V. Fowler jealous! The stories are witty, usually complicated and populated with adorable relatives, friends and rogues. You need a dictionary by your side as you read. Dare I say, I prefer Heyer to Austen!
