Explications
Aquila: I think of them as more science fiction than fantasy, especially if they fork from one small change.
rosalita: I don't think of alternative history books like Farthing to be science fiction, but that might just be me.
anglemark: Alternate history has long been classified by scholars as science fiction.
ejmam: Alternate history is SF, especially if it isn't alternate because magic

lorax : Not science fiction. Mainstream fiction with some SF trappings.
sarahemmm: My opinion is that all SF is 'mainstream with SF trappings'. It is interesting on the confusion caused by unexpected TT.
sturlington: I don't consider this book to be science fiction.
: Not SF

Explications
Morphidae: They are all police procedurals/mysteries set around 2060 New York. Some of the first novels also have romance, It also has off-planet flight, floating/flying cars, laser weapons instead of projectile weapons, virtual rooms, ubiquitous service droids as bartenders/maids/sex partners, probes that can tell you the exact time of death, etc. Of course it's science fiction.
ejmam: How is a book with hover cars, space installations, etc. set in the future not science fiction? Is Caves of Steel not SF because it's a mystery?
