Explications
aulsmith : Skipping. Too much blubber.
rainpebble : puts my brain in a muddle no matter how many attempts I make to read it.
amanda4242: I read it and discovered that I could quite happily have gone through life without having read it.
sturlington : Read in college.
JalenV: Read twice for different classes (one definitely in college), chose it the second time because I remembered enough from dfiscussing it the first time I figured it would help the second. (Still wonder if that preacher who appeared early in the book gave the same sermon every Sunday.)
Aprill: I love Melville's writing.
ManWithAnAgenda : Read. Interesting.
MyFathersDragon: I liked the book in 5th grade, but when I tried rereading in 11th grade, I didn’t find it interesting enough to read it, perhaps because I had previously read it.

.Monkey. : Read it. Hated it.
sturlington : Read in college
JalenV: I have, and have read, my copy. I was already familiar with the plot thanks to The Classics Reclassified by Richard Armour.
aekd: Not likely to read.
ahef1963: Loved it.
ManWithAnAgenda : Read. Nearly everything else he wrote is better.
MyFathersDragon: It was one of the classics to choose from to read in a high school class. I read lots of the choices, so I had options to choose from when it was time to write a book report.

JalenV: I've read it a couple of times. It's not as dull as Mansfield Park, but I can't say I like it much. I hope Emma and the Werewolves will be more fun.
ahef1963: Probably my least favourite Austen work, but still better than most other books of the period.

tiddleyboom: I know the whole plot and resolution of Jane Eyre; I've just never read the book.
JalenV: I have read this book so many times since I was a school girl. However, it wasn't until PBS first aired "I, Claudius" that I understood that "West Indies Messalina" insult.
Aprill: Enjoyed it.
ahef1963: A favourite.
MyFathersDragon: It was available when I was reading anything I could find. I reread it in high school.

amanda4242: Read in college.
electrice : read in 2013
JalenV: It's been decades, but watching the Overly Sarcastic Productions video about it on YouTube reminded me of details I'd forgotten, not to mention making me chuckle.
MyFathersDragon: I received it as a gift when I was about 12, so of course I read it. I reread it several years later, too.

tiddleyboom : Read it. Love Poe!
sturlington: This is very short; no reason not to read it.
JalenV: I don't have this particular copy, but I have the Poe book my parents gave me and the annotated tales of Poe. It's a good story.
ahef1963 : I don't like Poe, except for The Raven.
MyFathersDragon: I read a few of his poems in 3rd and 4th grade, liking them, so I read more of Poe when I came across him over the next few years, including this one. I don’t remember it well, now, but I remember liking it. It seems like that was in 6th grade.

sturlington : Not sure I would call this a classic
JalenV: I read it decades ago. That bit about not wanting to admit that Christ was poor rings true because I have a 19th century book on the lives of Saints Joseph, Joachim, and Anne. That book didn't want to talk about Joseph's poverty, but that he was descended from King David.
ahef1963 : Hated it twice. My dad loved it so much that I gave it a second try, but still hated it.

MyFathersDragon: We read the Secret Sharer in English class, but on the other side of it (upside down from each other) was this one, so I read it because it was available. The book also described it as a Joseph Conrad classic. I was determined to read lots of books considered classics when I was in high school.
