Explications
aspirit: Banned/burned within at least 13 countries. The author and multiple translators have been physically attacked, presumably because of 1989 "fatwa" (ruling in Islamic law) to kill Rushdie. The Japanese translator was murdered in 1991 (with the case officially unresolved). Bookstores carrying the book have been attacked.
