This was a fascinating novel, with such a nuanced, human view of revolutionary and liberatory impulses, actions, and dreams from so many different social locations. All of the threads were woven together in a natural way, not at all forced or simply convenient for driving the plot forward or to exemplify a particular idea.

Although I don't read Hindi so can't compare to the original text, I have lumbered through many translations that felt awkward or unreliable in style or tone. By contrast, Simona Sawhney's translation is fluid and almost transparent. I had not heard of Yashpal until my sister gave me this book to read. Simona Sawhney's translation is excellent. Her introduction is long, but I believe it is mandatory to read this introduction. Her section gives good insight into Yashpal, his history and his writing.

The story itself is simple and easy to follow. What sets the book apart from others is the commentary on the social mores prevailing. Yashpal weaved them into the conversations between the main protagonists. He was clearly ahead of his time. I'd say he was ahead of our time today.… (plus d'informations)
