This book explores the world of influencers, one of whom an acquaintance describes as, "Everybody knew who she was...but nobody really understood what she was doing." The author does a great job describing the mechanics of influencing, the mysteries of social media platform algorithms (as best as any outsider can, as they are designed to be inscrutable), and various jargon like engagement pods and hype houses. I like that she situates influencers in the broader contexts of the attention economy and millennial burnout, and she offers some small hope for the future with critical thinkers in the BreadTube subculture.
