The setting in this story is phenomenal. The way the main character describes the forest before a large part was cut down gives the feeling that you are out in nature. I love the main character Beanie, a Native American woman. She lives in the woods with her dog, a basset hound named Crusher. She is not happy that the woods around her is being destroyed. However, there is a bigger problem. While baby-sitting her daughter’s dog Calamity she takes the dogs for a walk in the woods. She makes a horrific discovery. One of the men cutting down the tree’s found chained to a tree and he has an arrow in his neck. She doesn’t want the local Native Americans being blamed for this.
The sheriff likes to crack jokes that tend to be a little racial.

The book is well written and the plot line flows so smoothly. I guessed throughout the entire thing as to who the murderer truly was. This is a well written mystery. This is the fifth book in her series and I ha e decided I must definitely read the other books in the series. This is a book I highly recommend.
I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

A Beanie and Cruiser Mystery series is a great cozy series, especially for basset hound lovers. Sue Owens Wright has a lot to handle in this book. Beanie MacBean fosters basset hounds. This time she fosters Calamity, a rambunctious and ever curious hound who is always hungry. Beanie’ daughter, Nona comes to visit her and has some bad news to deal with. There is also a murder at Lakeside Animal Shelter. The victim is actually found in the gas chamber for dogs. The shelter was so hated for its short kill date that it was called the Auschwitz of shelters. Also the animals were underfed and the holding pens were filthy. The manager is the one murdered, she was constantly losing her temper and it is almost a contest as to who wished her dead the most.

This reviled shelter has so many enemies including the Tahoe Animal Impoundment Liberation. There are several very strong candidates for the killer and yet I could not guess who it was until late in the book. The author also took the opportunity to educate the reading public on the ways of the Washoe Indians. Beanie is a tribe member of this group that is in both Nevada and California. This is a bonus to the great mystery cozy.

The more serious parts of this book are balanced by the antics of Calamity and the funny contests of the annual Waddle rally and parade. For me, this is a perfect cozy and I highly recommend it to all cozy readers.

Guess that I am all alone in my rating. But this book hit all my cozy wants and I loved it. Embarking on Murder was written by Sue Owens Wright. She knows how to charm with Cruiser's basset hound antics and I really don't think it is necessary to have a corpse if you enjoy the cozy enough.

The setting was at Lake Tahoe and this is one of my favorite places so I was delighted to learn all about the lake. I didn't realize that the lake was so deep when I visited and what treasures were under the waters. I think what I loved most of all was the relationship between the mother and daughter in this book. I really didn't care about the crime so much as the wonderful quirky characters that inhabit this book.

I highly recommend it for all Lake Tahoe lovers, dog lovers and for discriminating cozy lovers. I am hungry for more.
