The first 8 chapters of this book read quickly and flowed well. When I resumed reading in chapter 9, I suddenly realized that my belief that Rebecca was the real name and Rachel was the name Sarah chose to use while giving the lecture was wrong, and in fact, the reverse was true. I'm not sure this was the fault of the author--when I went back to look, the phrasing that was used could be taken either way, and I guess I didn't pick up on the fact that she was using the name Rebecca when speaking to the lecture group. The novel alternates between Sarah lecturing the group and slipping into Rebecca's life--so I guess I thought when Sarah was speaking to the group she was using Rachel's name though we, as readers, were seeing the window into Rebecca's life.

There were also a bunch of typos that really bothered me. The first one I noticed I thought perhaps it was a slip of the tongue or the character was trying to make a pun or be funny--but others there was no way to explain them. (Even the author's name shows up as J K Winn on the cover but is J S Winn in the about the author section--does someone really not know his or her own name?? Makes me wonder.

***SPOILER ALERT***

I am not usually good at guessing who done it--but in this case, I strongly suspected that Angela's boyfriend might be the same person as Becca's stalker. I just didn't realize that he would also be the same person as someone else in the story. I thought the author did a good job of balancing the clues and red herrings to make me unsure which of the final two guys was the sociopath. I wish the ending had been a bit more definite that he was caught/captured/incarcerated etc.

OUT OF THE SHADOW was a fantastic read. There were so many twists and turns that I couldn't put the book down. It kept my interest right from the beginning. The story was easy to follow and very well written. There was no way I would have predicted who the "bad guy" was. As mystery and/or thrillers are my favorite, I am always trying to figure things out. I was pleasantly surprised that this one had me guessing. It would be a must read in my books
