The imagery in many of these was fascinating, but the meanings that can be gleaned are a bit sparse. Not really my favorite kind of poetry.

I'm not going to pretend Nance Van Winckel rocks my world, any more than I'm going to pretend I'm an authority on poetry. I approach good poetry in the same way the Supreme Court approaches porn: I know it when I see it. But Van Winckel is poetry I like--not everything in her collections is brilliant, but there are plenty of gems to make the whole book work reading, and I frequently have to set down the book to breathe, to contemplate, or just to rest in the words--all as sure signs of great art as I know of.

(This review also covers After a Spell and Beside Ourselves, which I read at the same time as this book.)
