A book of English essays, (Half-title: English… par C. T Winchester
school text of essays, mostly English classics (Bacon, Cowley, Steele/asdfdison, Lamb , Hazlitt, DeQuinceyThackeray, Stevenson. Two Americans --Emerson and James Russsell Lowell. The one I like best is Lowell's "Of A Certain Condescension in Foreigners' talking of European (especially British) attitudes to the US and how they were affected by the Civil War. A bit chauvinist by modern standards but still fun.
