A novel in verse told from the point of view of Gerda Taro (Gerta Pohorylle), a Jewish Polish woman raised in Germany, who escaped to Paris as Hitler rose to power, and became a photojournalist who, together with Robert Capa (Hungarian Jew Andre Friedmann) captured the reality of the Spanish Civil War until her death in Brunete in 1937.

Usually I love a novel in verse, but I felt like the line breaks in this one were awkward, and the floating lines (not everything was aligned left) didn't necessarily add anything. Other readers may well feel differently.

Back matter: Dramatis Personae, author's note (including "fact or fiction"), acknowledgments, selected sources, glossary

Set in 1932 before Hitler comes to power in Germany, a novel in verse beautifully written, celebrating the love of two women and the friends that surround them. This was a glimpse into the world of queer folk, who were able to, for a short time, live their lives without worry, without homophobia, without the fear of being persecuted for the way they chose to live. I loved this book, read it in one sitting. Kip Wilson has become a favorite of mine in historical fiction genre.

An incredible, heart wrenching novel in verse celebrating one young woman’s fight against the Nazis during WWII. I wish I had known more about the White Rose during HS. This was a story of fighting for what one believes in with a passion while recognizing past beliefs as false, realizing the wrongs that were committed and coming to terms with this false belief. I’m sure there were many more who felt as Sophie did but were afraid to step forward for fear of retaliation from the Nazi Regime.
