While I bought this book in the "biography" section of a large book store, it is really more of a history of the politics of Ireland in the mid-1800s than a biography of Thomas D'Arcy McGee. Unfortunately (for me), I was hoping for the latter.

Of all the books I've read this year, this is my least favourite. It is, in my opinion, best summed up by one word: boring. The author has an annoying ability to add "ism" to almost any word -- and this detracted from my readism pleasure. There were many obscure words and references to historical events or movements (e.g., Ribbonism, the "Molly Maguires") that weren't explained, so this is not a book for a general reader, even if you are interested in Irish and Catholic politics in the 1800s.

Being a great lover of Canadian politics (including political history) and biography, I found the ending of the book....where McGee moves to Canada....the most interesting part. However, that's where the story ends. Dare I try Volume II when it comes out?
