Read at the Carle

A last walk through the woods with a loved child companion, told from the point of view of an old dog, complete with unique vocabulary. A soft, peaceful view of death as part of a natural cycle; from the afterlife, the dog watches its former family through the seasons and is pleased by the arrival of a new puppy.

Everything about this book will make a true dog person ugly-cry with love and longing. From the dog-oriented vocabulary ("Swirlies ruffle the fur on my upsidedown" means the wind ruffles the fur on his belly), to wuffwuffing farewell to the birds, to his last loyal walk with his Little, and the endsheets that portray their bond--it's a tribute to all the dogs that have been loved and all the dogs to come. I could never share this at storytime. I would be a mess.
