Being originally published in 1918, there are a number of songs in here that are unfamiliar to us. Other familiar tunes have different words. For example: Silent Night has a different translation than we are used to.

“Begone! Dull Care” and “Angry Words” both by Anonymous are examples of delightful little songs that are unfamiliar today.

“Angels Ever Bright and Fair” by Handel alerted me to an opera that was unfamiliar.

“Araby’s Daughter” in 6/8 time by E. Kiallmark with words by Thomas more we know as the hymn “Do What is Right” in 3/4 time

I found one song in it in two places, once with secular words and in another place as a hymn.

Since it has a thousand songs in it, the editor made the decision to typically only include one or two verses.

There were several songs where I found accidentals were missing. Since I have the PDF in ForScore, it was an easy matter to correct the errors. It is old enough that I downloaded a copy of it for free. There are other music books also available for free download by this author. As I recall, I downloaded this from IMSLP.

I am delighted with this book. I use it both for sight reading and for comparing with other arrangements of the tunes.

When liberals were in places of authority and esteem, they led us in song! Our nation was elevated from its bonded past with the robust culture of fearless goodness and kindness expressed by our voices joined in choruses, mighty and small! Since this publication date, the nation was pushed into the straights of the Depression in 1929, and after a hard-fought recovery, again in the Economic Collapse of 2008.

Notably, the "Southern" songs collected here are the dear treasures of black musicians ("Swanee River") and balladeers ("Poor Old Slave") and the romances of sensitive settlers ("My Old Kentucky Home"). The songs emerged in spite of the dominance, which continues to this day, of the feudal lords who strive to keep the poor ignorant and afraid. And poor. RRRrrr.

The Sacred Songs include the ecumenical Unitarian Universalist anthems. ("Ave Maria", "Flee as a Bird", "Green Hill Far Away", "Rockd in the Cradle of the Deep").
