I received access to a digital galley of this book through Edelweiss, but actually wound up reading a library copy before I got to reading the galley anyway.

The illustrations can be likened to depictions of Aesop's fables, with a modern feel. I like that the artist paid attention to little details, such as certain animals wearing native Choctaw patterns in their clothes. The story had a fun and lighthearted feel to it, and Chufki Rabbit is definitely a little trickster. It has been modernized for current audiences but I can imagine what the original tale was, and I think Leslie Stall Widener and Greg Rodgers did a great job retelling it.

Summary:
Chukfi the rabbit hides and lies his way though helping his neighbor, although he is discovered, he suffers from a horrible belly ache from eating the butter.

Personal Reaction:
I found this to be slightly offensive. Although the book says it is native american studies, I am not sure how it really fits. The rabbit lied and stole, however the author really doesn't give a clear indication as to which animal is to represent which nationality.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1.Could be used to show children that lies are going to cause problems
2. I would use this if there are issues during group work and showing that those who do not participate can suffer a consequence.

My personal response to the book: The book was excellent and I would like one for the elementary library. I may purchase this book on my own so I have it for my Native American unit.
Curricular connections: The curricular connections include: animals, science, being a friend, honesty, and being helpful is always more joyful. I would like this book to accompany my Native American unit.
