**this review contains spoilers; but only for the first three chapters**

i don't usually rate books that i don't finish--especially if i don't get a decent amount of the way through them. but i feel confident that i KNOW what i would think of the rest of this book and i didn't like it. let's get into the nitty gritty of what happened, because i took notes:

THE GOOD
- the name of the fictional town is "port peculiar"
- the heroine is called "lily thistle" what a fabulous name

THE BAD
- the book description makes it sound like he really big plot driver is going to be lily walking to her first day as a kindergarten teacher and finding a body. in the three chapters i read, the body is referenced like, twice. it isn't described and lily spends most of the three chapters not even really thinking about it. she's more focused on the fact that she's going to be late for the first day of her new job and how that's going to affect her. she's so concerned about this that she complains to the 911 operator because she's going to have to stay at the scene until the cops get there so she can answer some questions and that's a bad thing. i... i don't know. lily, you need to get your priorities straight.

- the dialogue is... not how people talk.

- the description is really odd. the narrator is very present, but it doesn't feel like it's lily. which is hella weird to me. i feel like the author needed to step back from their writing.

- the pacing is all over the place. in the middle of waiting for the cops to come and help her BECAUSE SHE FOUND A DEAD BODY, lily takes the time to think about how she moved from oregon to washington. uh, okay. but, like, i'd like to know more about the dead guy that you just found, lily, and less about how you still live in the pacific north west but now just in a different state.

THE UGLY

- there is so SO much about the three chapters that i read that's ugly i kinda was at a loss about where i should start. but then i remembered: lily thistle is horny AS FUCK. she's in the middle of finding a corpse and she notices that he's butt ass naked:
"And yes, Lily could tell the body was a he from the large broad chest and, well, from the parts that were not all that well hidden."
W H A T. uh, when i said i wanted more description of the body i wasn't talking about his dick.

out of the three other male characters that make an appearance, lily is hot for two of them. the only thing i know about port peculiar's chief of police is that he's a "hunk." hm.
"Her heart thumped happily, beating harder as she watched a tall dark-haired man with a chiseled jaw approach her."

"Come to momma, came to mind as she smiled and noticed the hunky cop smiling back."

"At least we know who’s in charge here, Lily thought, admiring the hunk’s take-charge demeanor."

"Lily turned back to gaze at the divine specimen before her [...]"
and it really just keeps going on and ON AND ON AND ON like that. we get it, you think he's hot!!

- there's a character that comes along when lily finds the body and all we know about him is that he's "[...] actually a little on the handsome side" and he smokes weed. next to a corpse. out of a pipe?? what is going on??

- the author describes lily's appearance like a 12-year-old fanfic author in 2012 on fanfiction.net. which is okay, you need to get the silly descriptions out so you can improve and i really shouldn't throw stones because i SUCK at describing things still at times, but this is a published book and i... i feel like someone should have read this before it was published and been like: "sweetie pie, this needs more work before it's ready."

- this line: "He stopped a few feet from the body, so the two of them were buns, the man partially bobbing in the water, partially ashore was the meat."

TL;DR
i just have no idea what the fuck was going on with this one. i feel like this was someone's really self-indulgent self-insert fanfic, which is fine! i've written several of those. my favorite OC is basically who i wish i was most of the time. but you can't always make this into a viable book and i don't think the author understood that. also, please don't let yourself get horny around dead bodies, it's not a good look.

so, onto the next!

short, cozy-mystery, friendship *****

This is the first in this series that I have read, but I will be looking for others. Two good friends, one a former local police dispatcher, now go to auctions and sales to buy items to remake and sell. The town's Farm and Home Museum is in financial trouble, but then the founder is discovered murdered inside the museum. Let the sleuthing begin! Just the right size read!
