It was fun to read this engrossing story of gay love in the ice hockey world. Wendt is a very talented writer. Real and poignant portrayals of hockey and the life of an athlete are made. It is not necessary to be a hockey enthusiast to enjoy this book. However, if you are, or if you have played the game, you will be able to identify with Heading North's realities about acceptance and resistance to change in sports culture.

This book blew me away. I had to wait a little bit after receiving it to make sure I was in the right head space for something that sounded emotional and intense, but I'm so glad I got there because I loved this book so much. The characters were so real that I felt like most of them were friends by the end, even Nikolai when I never actually got to "meet" him present-day. I did kinda need a bit of a guide to keep track of who was who and their relationship to each other/importance to the story, but part of that is due to my terrible memory, lol. I don't tend to judge a book by its cover as a rule because that can be deceiving on either side, but this gorgeous cover (which, I will say, is what first drew me into reading the synopsis) is an accurate representation of the quality content and material found in the book. Following a character's grief as they try to process it, make sense of it, fight their way through the worst of it is always fascinating to me because I---and many others, unfortunately---can relate all too well. And I love seeing the different mechanisms people (fictional or otherwise) use to cope. Everyone's different, and relying on friends/teammates/community/role models to metaphorically "hold you up" is such a huge part of it. I'm proud of Viktor and his character development, and I absolutely look forward to more from this author. Four and a half stars from me.… (plus d'informations)

Wendt’s book Heading North is very well written. I am not a hockey fan but found that the depiction of the games was very clear. The characters are three dimensional and seem very real. One difficulty I had was with the number of names to remember as the story progressed. It took me some time to sort out who they were.
While I was reading the early part of the book, I was relieved that Nikolai was killed early on before I had a chance to get to know and like him. But that wasn’t exactly true. Nikolai was an active character throughout, especially because Viktor could never reconcile Nikolai’s death and his own survival.
The painful part of a gay relationship is the inability to share with friends that you have found the love of your life. Viktor struggles with this during the entire book. Viktor cannot own the role of the widower whom everyone consoles.
I thank Library Thing Early Reviewers for the opportunity to review this book.

This debut novel by Holly Wendt surprised me as it was just that good. Despite my complete and total lack of knowledge regarding hockey at any level, I really got into this book because it is not really a book about hockey, it is a book about relationships. We meet Viktor and Nikolai as they are going their separate ways - Viktor is heading off the the USA from Russia to make his debut for an NHL team. However, his lover Nikolai never gets to where he was going because his plane tragically crashes. Viktor must now adapt not only to another country and another team, but to a life without Nikolai in it. Excellent prose and wonderful characterization in a book that touches on so many of today's hot topics make this a novel not to be missed.… (plus d'informations)
