The book delivers entry-points for the reader who is not familiar with Portugal or its role in WWII as a neutral country with traditional alliances with England. After a slow start, it becomes more interesting when it focuses on individuals, whether refugees, relief workers, or diplomats and politicians. I am using it as a source and making a list of people about whom I would like to read further. I would consider this a popular history book which will leave the reader with a good general overview of Portugal during WWII. I recommend it to people who are interested in WWII and would like to expand their understanding of the European theater.… (plus d'informations)

A collection of very many short stories about people who passed through Lisbon during World War II. Light on analysis; interesting at times for the poignancy of the stories. Also gives stories of the famous who passed through Lisbon, or stayed almost for their remaining lives.
