2828 California's Reluctant Prelate: The Life and Times of Right Reverend Thaddeus Amat, C.M. (1811-1878), by Rev. Francis J. Weber (read 23 Jan 1996) Amat was born in Barcelona, Spain, Dec 31, 1811, was ordained in Paris Dec 23, 1837, arrived in the US Oct 20, 1838, was consecrated bishop Mar 12, 1854, in Rome, and was bishop of Monterey (in 1859 the title of the diocese was changed to Monterey and Los Angeles) till he died May 12, 1878. This book had good things about it, but it hops around some chronologically. Amat talked quite a bit at the Vatican Council, and did some good there. The book is made to look like a book of matches. The paper cover opens to reveal a title page printed over a printed "comb" of matches. Twelve pages, printed on one side are stapled into the matchbook-like cover. The book gives a brief history of matches and matchbooks. Distributed at the 3rd Miniature Book Society Conclave in Los Angeles in 1985. Cover title reads: "Grand Conclave 3 Los Angeles 1985". Gift of Esther Beamer. [kkk/89]

An account of the formation of the Miniature Book Society in Ohio, 1983. Although the same information was printed twice before, this is the first miniature version, and one of the very few miniatures produced by Richard J. Hoffman. (Dawson's List 130 - #1, 1984. $8.00; List 155 - #71, 1987. $15.00)
