This book dates from 1920, just prior to the foundation of the new Turkish Republic. Writen explicitly for the puils at Robert College on the shors of the Bosphorous, it reflects the population of the time, with the index showing words translated into Osmanli Turkish, Russian, Armenian, French and Greek.

It is a model of English used to be taught, heavily reliant on phoentic transcriptions of passages and what were at the time judged appropriate rhymes and sotries for children, such as "The Death of Cock Robin".

It contains instructions on good manners, grooming and polite conversation: it carries with it the odour of a bygone era.

A delightful glimpse into a world long gone.
