- Robert B. Waltz received his bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics from Hamline University in 1985, and has been involved in folk music for most of his life. In 1996, he became the founding editor of The Traditional Ballad Index, a free online bibliography and reference for folk songs of English-speaking nations. His books include The Minnesota Heritage Songbook, published in 2008 to celebrate the sesquicentennial of Minnesota's statehood; The Gest of Robyn Hode; and Romancing the Ballad, a study of the Orpheus myth and how myths and romances become ballads. He currently shares a home with several acoustic instruments and many thousand books.

It is usually asserted that ballads are transmitted by oral tradition, while romances are transmitted by written tradition. Both these statements are dubious. (p. 36) - RW
