I would use this book as a read aloud for a fourth grade class room and an independent read for fifth graders. I would plan on reading this book during Black History Month to further educate my students about the struggles that many African Americans faced. I would have the students create their own version of a journal on how they believe these brave students might have felt when when they first arrived at the school where they previously were not allowed entrance. I believe that this writing assignment will open many of my students eyes as to how difficult it must have been for these students to be thrown into this hostile environment. While they are creating these journals, I will continue to read to them articles and other stories that depict African Americans breaking down barriers to further illustrate the powerful emotions they must have been facing. For fifth graders, I would have them read this story independently because I believe it is at their reading level. They will be able to creating a timeline that shows the accomplishments that Civil Rights Movements were able to accomplish and explain why these actions were important and what their effects where in that time period and in our own society today.… (plus d'informations)
