- Priscilla Bell was born into an English Quaker family. In 1771, she married Edward Wakefield, a merchant of London, and the couple had three children. She began writing in her forties -- among her many works were moral tales, science and travel writing aimed at children, and a feminist tract, Reflections on the Present Condition of the Female Sex, with Suggestions for its Improvement (1798). Priscilla Wakefield also founded and promoted several charities, including a maternity hospital and a pension plan for the poor.
