This book to me is a passage into wonderland. It is the first complete Dutch History and the most influential written before 1850. The book give complete access to nineteenth century common knowledge. Most Dutch historical novelists and intellectuals have studied this book and whether they agreed with it or not, it permeated their thoughts.

But it is not a nineteenth century book. On the contrary, it breaths the fresh air of enlightenment and, though fallible, strives for truth and impartiality. The language is simple, as the book is directed at men (and possibly even woman) without a classical education.

I never expected a textbook to be so much fun to read. But on top of a grand tour of the nineteenth centuries most influential ideas on history, this book offers a strong narrative and an attention to detail which makes history come alive. Add to that the illustrations, which have inspired generations of writers and the books 21 volumes become irresistible.
