Nigel Viney began his career in publishing as a bookseller for Blackwells in Oxford and then for Dennys in London. He joined William Heinemann in 1963 as production manager and worked his way up to managing director. After retiring, he wrote several books including The Great Paintings of England, afficher plus Images of Wartime: British Art and Artists of World War I, and The Bluffer's Guide to Consultancy. The Great Paintings of England - The Shell Guide par Nigel Viney
Not in fact paintings 'of England' - indeed the title page carries Seurat's 'Une Baignade, Asnieres'. Rather this is an outline guide to collections of painting held in England. Indeed, while its coverage of galleries is quite comprehensive, the number of individual paintings described is relatively small and most collections get just one or two selective illustrations. None the less a very useful tome to have about the place (or in the car) when travelling.
