Google also has a dynamically changing set of rules to improve search results, and penalize webmasters who are using non-ethical techniques to manipulate search results (e.g. getting viagra / medications listed in search results that focus on music).

If you are looking to organically improve the traffic to you site, then this book is very helpful, even if it is a bit outdated.
