Charming, quirky. Gave a vivid picture of modern life in the Philippines, with a heavy dose of magic and its consequences.

diverse children's middlegrade fiction (brown-skinned 11-y.o. girl in modern-day Philippines, affected by war on drugs, colonial prejudices, poverty and addiction, with incidentally gay/bi father)
lovely descriptions of food and sights, along with other, less pleasant aspects of life in the Philippines. Though only 10 (almost 11), Sab deals with some heavy topics here, but does have a supportive older sister and two sets of parents who love her.

I loved the voices in this book, and the story has a great mix of mystery and adventure. I also was SO HUNGRY after reading about all the tasty foods Sab loves.

Sab isn't sure what the problem is, just that she wants to see them reconciled. But as hinted by Nadine's news reporting assignment, their father's problem is bigger than Sab knows. Set in current-day Philippines under president Duterte, this explores the impact of drug addiction and corruption in power on a level accessible for kids.… (plus d'informations)
