* I got this book for review*

I thought this was fun quick pace read. I think this is also a great bridge book between middle grade and YA. I also did like the mystery element that was fun and engaging. I struggled a little bit to feel connected to the character. I really loved the the culture and background elements. I also found this to be quick read. It thought this mystery was had to figure it out and would be def read more by this author in the future.

"You don't have to believe to be protected. I believe enough for all of us."

Tia Lugo Speaks No Evil by Danette Vigilante was such a joy to read for #PRHeritageMonthTour. It was dripping with Puerto Rican adobo, sazon and sofrito. The representation hit home for me in every way. I wish this book existed when I was in middle grade. Tia's character and story was so relatable to me as a Nuyorican Brooklynite.

The aspects that really hit home for me were:
🇵🇷 the culture clash across generations
🇵🇷 the misunderstanding and intolerance of ancestral ways
🇵🇷 the strong love of family
🇵🇷 the power of abuelita's love
🇵🇷 the ways girls are treated differently once they hit puberty
🇵🇷 the way brown kids have to grow up faster than they need to because of certain environments
🇵🇷 the innocence of first loves
🇵🇷 how real life can become horror
🇵🇷 how secrets create trauma
🇵🇷 the importance of safe spaces for kids in NYC neighborhoods
🇵🇷 the strength of tradition and culture

I loved that the atmospheric writing really brought this story to life. I was SCARED for real the entire time. The abuelita moments softened the mood throughout. I am absolutely in love with this one forever and I highly recommend you pick this one up and share with your friends and family. If you're looking for a scary, Brooklyn story with lots of boricua spice this one is for you.

derailed by an empty construction site. Lionel wants to see the big machinery up close. It’s a good thing, too. When they hear the cries of what they think is a hurt animal, they find an abandoned newborn baby girl in the Porta-Potti.

The 13-year olds aren’t sure exactly what to do, but they know the baby needs help PDQ. Together, they take the baby to a hospital where the two fall under suspicion that the baby is theirs. Once their mother’s arrive, Anisa’s mother forces her to undergo a physical examination to prove that the baby is not hers.

Lionel isn’t cleared right away, and everyone has suspicions. The baby opens up a deep, old wound for Lionel, who was abandoned by his father. As the older of the three children, Lionel felt the most pain. Unable to stand for the baby to go into foster care, Lionel hatches a plan to kidnap the child.

To fund his plan, Lionel gets mixed up with a group of drug-dealing teenagers, slightly older than he.

Vigilante creates strong and interesting characters. The mixed-races Brooklyn neighborhood lends authenticity to urban youth. They grow up long before they should.

The story is well-crafted but is almost stereotypical. A happy ending is surely guaranteed. I give this novel 3 out of 5 stars.
