For the serious academic film viewer only, The Gus Van Sant Touch by Justin Vicari offers an in-depth review of Van Sant's most famous films including My Own Private Idaho, Milk, Good Will Hunting and Elephant. Most readers (and film watchers), however, will find this book dry and pretentious as the writer spends little time focusing on acting or scene setting and instead views the film through other interdisciplinary approaches. The Gus Van Sant Touch is a pretentious and verbose book that I would only recommend to people who are looking for a cure for insomnia.

Being a fan of van Sant's work I found this book more than a bit esoteric and quite pretentious. I was disappointed in it and would not recommend it to anyone.

If you're a fan of Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Milk, Elephant, etc...) then you would definitely enjoy reading this book. It's a pretty in-depth look at the recurring themes of Van Sant's projects, interpretations of his work, and the flimmaker's influences. This book, though not a simple read, was very entertaining. He also draws a comparison to other other writers (I give author Justin Vicari an extra half a star for discussing one of my favorite writers William Burroughs).

Overall this was a fabulous book, and I completely recommend it if you're a Gus Van Sant fan, or if you're interested in LGBTQ filmmaking.… (plus d'informations)
