Okay, I'll admit - I did not read every word of this very, very long book. I looked at the pictures! Especially all the cheeses. MMMM. This book made me hungry. It also made me a bit sad - I will probably never go to these foreign countries to eat some of this food. Or, if I can find the food here in the U.S., it won't be the same - it will be mass marketed, not grown from a local farm. That being said, it still made me hungry. And it was fun to peruse. I liked looking at some of the unusual vegetables and fruit. And there's a certain sense of satisfaction when you actually find something that you have eaten.… (plus d'informations)

The foodie in me loves to explore this book and drool over the amazing colour photos and descriptions of some of the world's finest foods. I have tried a few of the items (i.e. cheeses, etc), but some entries would surely make even the likes of Des Esseintes (character from Huysmans' novel, Against Nature) swoon.

1001 Foods to Taste Before You Die is not a cookbook but rather a food resource book. This is an encyclopedia of various foods, some you may have heard of, many you probably have not. Despite it’s encyclopedia style presentation, there are many popular foods not listed here. Discounting these lapses, the number of foods represented is almost overwhelming.

The foods presented are grouped according to type, i.e. Meats, Fish, etc, and the regions these delicacies originated in are listed, but there is no cross-indexing of regions to foods that may be found there. That is perhaps the single biggest shortcoming of the work.

Included for each entry is a brief description of the flavor of each item and many entries also give an idea of how each may be traditionally used. While there are no recipes, you will be inspired to experiment. If you enjoy foods and are not afraid of exotic fare, 1001 Foods to Taste Before You Die is a must have for your kitchen.
