The work in this exhibition, "Recovering Lives," relates directly to an era of global unrest, political tension and mass movements of displaced people resulting from natural disasters and war zones. In this context, many artists have become politicized. They see their creative work as a practical way of highlighting human rights issues and the plight of communities and individuals. Their work is important with visual images communicating often very difficult circumstances to new audiences. Viewing these images helps to develop an appreciation of what might be involved in the recovery of the lives or the rehabilitation of these people. "Art, more than any other means of human expression is capable of revealing not only the absolute, but the less easily definable and identifiable aspects of human rights."'
