William Tuckwell, the radical parson, looks back at his Winchester College days in the 1840s. How times have changed. The younger boys fagged for the older ones. Beatings were brutal. They played 'informal cricket, known as 'small crockets', played with tizzy poole and wicket stump. Tizzy poole was a sixpenny tennis ball, bought of Poole the head-porter', page 74. 'The dinners were mutton, mutton, mutton, six days out of seven', page 112, etc.This copy is inscribed 'Henry Furneaux - with Joan Ruskin Severn's love, Brantwood, 7th August 1893' and loosely inserted is an autograph letter from Tuckwell to Furneaux: 'Waltham ? Feb. 1897, Dear Furneaux, My paper on ?Pathras & Jowett is only today in the 'Speaker'. They found it long, & have cut it in two - the first part now, the other I suppose next week.
