The author described the mystery cults of Greek "paganism," Mithraism, Judaism, Christianity, and Gnosticism. She explored their origins or their condition before this era; how they developed in the era; what factors led to their success, adaptations, and in many instances, demise.

Historically well-grounded. A good introduction to the topic.

Tripolitis presents the major philosophical schools and religions of Late Antiquity succinctly and with a satisfactory amount of detail. The book is designed as a survey, and as such, does not cover anything in exhaustive depth. However, the excellent footnoting throughout the text looks to be an extremely helpful guide for further research. Overall, it's a superb introductory text.
