D. G. Tor has edited a collection of various topics and writers, all pursuing visions of details of the two states which dominated the ninth century CE. the carolingian state is usually the framework central to such collections, but Dr. Tor has taken another perspective and this work has a considerable Islamic input, culminating in the summation by Michael Cook, an islamic scholar. A summation that does open some new lines of enquiry into the differences of the two states, and possible effects of differing marriage and religious patterns.
